Thanks again to Maggie for sharing an amazing alternative to the traditional Banana Chips. As a kid, I grew up on ‘hippie’ food – don’t take offence please, it’s just the truth. My mom canned, grew, harvested and made everything from scratch. We visited the co-op two towns away weekly in order to get healthy ingredients in bulk and I am grateful for what she taught me. After watching the peanuts get massacred into peanut butter, I would always pick out one ‘treat’. Banana chips were my favourite. I now know that they’re laced with sugar and/or honey and deep fried. I thank Maggie for coming up with this great version of my kid-fave treat (~Adina)
You can make a healthy, crunchy, satisfying snack out of bananas. This may keep your hands off some of the less-than-healthy snacks you find during parties or summer BBQs. These go well with my Apple Chips and Spicy Roasted Chickpeas from a few posts back (see blog here). If you put out healthy snacks, you will eat healthy!
So pretty! I love the violet-like floral pattern that develops!
You will need (for a large batch):
3-4 large bananas
ground cinnamon
ground ginger
ground cardamom
Preheat your oven to 250 degrees. Cover a large sheet pan(s) with parchment paper. If you don’t have parchment paper … go get some. It really is necessary, because the sugar in the fruit will stick even to non-stick or teflon surfaces! I speak from experience. Slice the bananas into 1/4″ to 1/8″ rounds, and lay them out on your sheet pans. Sprinkle them with your cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom to taste. The more you sprinkle on, the more intensely spiced the chips will be; I like them super flavorful, so I go for it!
Place the sheet in the oven for 2-2 1/2 hours, checking every half hour, until the bananas shrink up and turn golden brown, and are firm to the touch. Remove the chips from the oven, and let the chips cool for five to ten minutes, then gently pry the bananas off the parchment. They should remove fairly easily, but you can use a spatula if they are a little difficult. Once they are completely cool, store in an airtight container at room temperature, and enjoy!!
Now for the breakdown: 10 grams of these banana chips (a small handful) is only 30 calories. That’s pretty darn good for a game day snack! You can put these in granola, cereal, yogurt, dip them in peanut butter or a healthy Greek yogurt dip, or just eat them by themselves. So delicious! Enjoy guys, and as always, let me know what you think!
