I recently had a discussion with a mom about her desire to get her life on the healthy path. She stepped on the scale and for the first time in her non-pregnant life, saw 205 pounds. She said she was sad, shocked, mad and… you guessed it, motivated to move towards change. We ended up talking for almost an hour. I have to say, as a trainer and someone still moves towards health daily, I was elated hearing the truth and pain in her voice. And part of me, oddly enough, was reminiscent to the conversation I had with a trainer a couple years back when, I too, was at my heaviest non-pregnant weight of over 270 pounds looking for ANY hand to hold mine and help me through the first few steps.
This is for her…
(and please note: this could easily be written for any ‘group’ of persons, but today I choose to address the group with whom I identify most and who are always top of mind for me.)
Dear SAHM, Mom Working Two Jobs, Single Mom, Morbidly Obese Mom, Mom Who Doesn’t Know Where To Start:
This is possible.
The life you hope for, dream of, imagine when at the play ground with your kids; it’s possible. And you deserve it.
Sometimes we don’t know where to start. Sometimes the idea of starting is so overwhelming we decide to stay where we are in hopes things will JUST GET BETTER. Sometimes we take a false start and get frustrated. This is all okay. It is all okay because today I give you permission to do for you.
Doing for ourselves is tough. Even before we try to take action, the thought of putting us before our kids, our jobs, our ailing parents or our partners paralyzes us in our steps. Why? Because we have come accustom to giving to others. When the thought of ‘doing for me’ creeps up, we feel guilt and guilt is equally paralyzing and can extingish the spark inside us for change.
Do. Take Action. Believe You Deserve.
If this is not possible, know I believe you deserve it and I will be here to help you. Three years ago someone believed in me at a time when I could barely walk up a flight a stairs and unable to play with my children. I had no hope of a healthy life, a life of activity with my li’ls, a body that I was proud of and could believe was desirable. There was no way I could even imagine a life outside the house-of-a-body I had self-created with years of overeating, inactivity and unloving thoughts about myself.
But, there was hope in someone else and that’s what I believed in. I didn’t believe in myself, but in the hope of someone else who believed in me. And being around that person enough, I started believing that I deserved what she was helping me attain – I could change. With every punch on that sand bag, every step on that treadmill, every healthier choice I put in my mouth, I began to believe I deserved.
When time is not on your side, finances a roadblock, support unseen (etc, etc, etc), starting a “get healthier me” journey may seem out of reach. I was there. I could not imagine life other than as I was living it. Know this isn’t it. There is more life to inhale and experiences to taste and feel. You can.
And you will.
Take a moment today to imagine life differently. If you can’t, drop me a line at adina [at] tipsofthescale [dot] com or any one of my Social Media links below. I love listening to others stories and will always believe in the very best version of you… You, but different.
Your humble and always available supporter,
Adina
