Sometimes Those Around Us Are The Heaviest

We have explored many topics in the short time we have been offering our blog to you; lifting, obstacles, success, grocery shopping, philosophical points of view – more than not, focussing on the mental work that is so much apart of this journey as eating “X’ and moving “Y”.

Through my reading, research and listening to those around me, I am hearing a common topic come up from those who are on their own weight loss path.  The general consensus is that through our own transformation, a possible realization occurs; we are holding on to people in our lives that are, in reality, heavier than the weight we are trying to lose.

When Do I Get My Lightsaber?

“We must all either wear out or rust out, every one of us. My choice is to wear out.”
-Theodore Roosevelt

One of my favorite quotes from Tips of the Scale came from Dana from episode 5 who shared this brilliant thought:

There’s no doubt that preparation can be one of the most valuable skills and talents you can learn along your weight loss journey. That could mean preparing healthy meals or a workout plan, but today, we’re going to be addressing how to prepare yourself mentally against the trials and tribulations that come with attempted fat loss using the Stoic principle of The Inner Citadel.

Motivation Monday: Sneak An Extra Hour Into Your Day

A common complaint doctors hear from patients is that they simply don’t have enough time to exercise or take better care of themselves. No time to cook, watch that yoga DVD, or take that spin class.

It doesn’t have to be that complicated.

Recipes of the Scale! Strawberry Banana Baked Protein Oatmeal

It hasn’t been super warm this summer here in SW Ontario.  Because of this, I have been gravitating towards warmer breakfasts and this one is a beauty.

As always, make this your own!  Play with the recipe and ingredients and find what is best for you and your family.

Hope you enjoy this week’s Recipe of the Scale by Maggie!

This May Not Be About Weight Loss

I would normally leave this type of topic for my personal blog, but the more I have thought about our audience here at Tips of the Scale, our contributors and our past and future guests, the more I was convinced this was the right decision.  But do you know what really convinced me?  I was scared to hit that blue glowing PUBLISH button to the right of the screen.  Always a good sign that what you’re about do is worth doing.

I preface this entry with a disclaimer – you may get nothing out of reading this.  And if that’s the case I do apologize for never getting back the next seven minutes of your life.  But if you read, and give yourself permission to live with purpose, resolve and passion, then I am happy you are here today (Group A, I am also grateful you dropped in – always!).

Reader warning: explicit content ahead & no fancy images!

Sometimes Giving Up is Ok

“Genius is the ability to put into effect what is in your mind. There’s no other definition of it.”
-F Scott. Fitzgerald.

Welcome back Stoic Students. Today we’re going to wax biographical. Today we’re going to talk about the gentler side of quitting.

The day I decided to change my life was the Fifth of November. Yes, really. Remember, remember the Fifth of November.

This change was so far overdue. I was consuming over 5500 calories per day. My life was out of control. I had given up not only physically but in life, in love, professionally, personally and spiritually. It was nothing short of an ephiphany that made me believe in myself again for the first time in years. I wanted to set a goal to achieve something that would demonstrate that I was fit, strong and healthy. I decided on a goal and publicly proclaimed on Facebook at over 400 pounds:

TinierTim-Marathon

I was 31 at the time. I turn 35 in about 6 weeks. Spoiler alert: In 6 weeks, I will fail to reach my goal. But I am by no means a failure. Let’s get Stoic for a minute.

Motivation Monday: Our Biggest Enemy

Happy Motivation Monday everyone! Today I want to talk to you our biggest enemy. Contrary to what we might think, it’s not the scale, it’s not food, it’s not even Galactus, Devourer of Worlds (aka, me in high school). No, our biggest enemy that we have to face, our final boss, is ourselves. We are … Read more

Recipes of the Scale! Peanut Butter & Jelly Protein Muffins (Gluten Free, Grain Free, Vegetarian Friendly)

Wow!  That is all I can say.  Maggie has a slew of recipes to scroll through on her blog Fake It ‘Til You Bake It and I’m telling you, when this little gem came up I needed to share! Now that nuts of all sorts are banned from our schools here in our district, I rarely use any nut butters around my kids, which is a mistake.  These will certainly find their way into our mix of muffin treats (mine include zucchini, pumpkin and carrot!).

Creating A Better Me – Progress Update #1

I can’t believe it has already been six weeks and I am back for my first update! It has certainly been a busy month with some great accomplishments and experiences and a few low points as well. Hey I promised honesty and that’s what I plan on giving you each and every month!

I’ve come to realize that losing weight in general is difficult but when you’ve been overweight most of your life you don’t really know any different it makes that daunting task all that more difficult. Some habits are so deeply ingrained and come so naturally that you need to re-teach yourself how to do things almost like teaching a baby. I’ve found myself throwing an internal temper tantrum when trying to decide to have that salad over going for a sandwich.
